Question Regarding fixit ticket that has come back to haunt me.

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

In 2001 I received a fix it ticket for out of date registration. I got my car registered, had an officer sign off the ticket and mailed it into the court. I never heard a thing back from them and moved to San Francisco a year later.

Flash forward to 2009. I received a notice at my work that my wages were being garnished to pay an $1100 debt of some sort that did not match anything on my credit reports. The address on the notice was where I used to live in San Jose although there was a slight misspelling in my last name. When I called the number provided I was told this was in relation to the previously mentioned fix it ticket and that there was nothing they (the state franchise tax board) could do to help me. I contacted the court and was referred back to the state franchise tax board.

Is there anyway I can fight this? I dont have any records from 8 years ago any longer but I remember specifically getting the ticket signed and sending it in. $1100 isnt a huge amount of money but with the economy the way it is at the moment its money I dont want to just give up when I havent been told of this debt in over 8 years (or ever until the other day).

Please help.

You don't mention paying the small (at the time) processing fee. Perhaps you failed to do that.

I remember sending in a check with the ticket as well but since this was 8 years ago I cant get records from my bank since they only keep them for 7 years and I no longer have any statements from that long ago.
