Re-issue another check?

September of 2004, I purchased a new vehicle from an auto dealership. I wrote a check for $16,000 down and got an invoice for the $16,000 check. A month after taking delivery, I got a call from the finance manager saying he could not find my check, but he would continue looking for it. After making payments on the vehicle for a few more months, I paid it off (Got the title). Eight months later they call back and say that I need to pay them $16,000. Am I obligated to issue them another check?

My response:

The only thing you're "entitled to" is to have the vehicle repossessed by the dealership because your contract fails for lack of consideration.
