Reposession Question

Illinois. I had a vehicle reposessed 3 years ago. I have been on a debt payment plan, and I will be paying off the balance within a year. My fiance and I are looking to buy a house and I was wondering if it would look better on my credit to have paid off the debt in full, or if I would have the same situation. . .debt paid or not, just because I had a reposession? I was also contemplating buying a new vehicle since my financial state has changed a lot for the better, should I wait till this debt is paid or would I have the same situation afterwards because I have a reposession on my credit score?
