Served with Civil Citation Citi

What is the name of your state? TX
I owe a credit card debt to Citi Bank. I used a CSC service that paid them nothing. I started paying them $50 a month once I realized what had happened. (they never sent me a current statement, I used an old one and made copies) Last payment of $50 was posted by Citi on 11/8/04. On 11/10/04 I received a very harsh letter from a CA- M,H,B & G collection attoneys in Lubbock, TX. I responed with a validation letter, they responded basically saying I owed the debt. I sent them another letter in Dec/04 asking if I could settle the debt or work something out with them. (I had stopped the payments to Citi, when I received the first CA letter.) They never responded. I received a Civil Citation yesterday, delivered to a friend of mine at my front door. It says I am being sued in my county (Hardin) in Texas. Complete law suit, saying that I have 20 days to respond. I don't know how or what to do. Should I call Citi and see if we can settle out of court? ($7240.00 + $1600.00 in legal fees) I have called Citi and they referred me to the attorney. Should I call this attorney and try to work with them? Can I still file bankruptcy at this late date? Please help???
Thanks
