Shady collection company or identity theft?

What is the name of your state? Wyoming

Here's the deal, I've got this horrible company calling my house at 8:59 pm every night. They claim they bought a delinquint phone account, and so far only a portion of their info is correct on us. THey have the right name, the right address. What is conflicting is the date that service started (2 years after it actually was) and ended (looooong after we moved.) Moreover, the original phone company has no record on us during that time period, which they wouldn't. I have no idea what phone number we had back then, it was about 7 years ago, but the phone company said that number didn't go into service until a year after the collection company said service was ended. NOW, I am having to fill out an identity theft police report but I'm wondering (and believe) that the real culprit is the collection agency. IF the later is true, how do I get rid of them and get this info off my credit report?

Could be a mistake or could be legit.

You can stop the calls by sending a Cease & Desist letter. All you need to say is "I dispute this debt" and "cease and desist all contact". Send the letter certified mail and keep a copy.

The C&D might get you sued. If you are sued, you will need to respond to the lawsuit by filing a general denial and asking for proof of the debt.

You can dispute the entry on your credit report by writing a dispute letter directly to the 3 reporting agencies.

If none of this sounds like a good idea, you could just pay the darn thing.
