Small debt, want to pay, collection agency can't find the papers

What is the name of your state? Massachusetts

Two years ago I left Boston, and left a small energy bill to be paid by a friend. He forgot to pay and I only found that because now I applied for a bank credit. I can't have credit at my bank, due to this pending account. The bill is now with a collection agency. I contacted them, offering to pay the bill immediately and in full, but they say they cannot find the bill within their own departments. Is there anything I could do, so that they release my credit at the bank? Would something like an escrow account, with the amount on their behalf, waiting for them to produce the invoice or other document with the outstanding payment? I need to quickly clean my credit, and I think the agency won't say no to a reasonable measure. Can you give me some advice? I am out of the country, so I can't go personally to the collection agency, but I can get my bank to pay or to open an escrow account, if that can solve the problem. Many thanks for any advice.
