small finance companies

i have a loan at a small finance company and cant afford to pay the full payments on it, so i sent them a money order for the amount that i could pay on it. they rejected it but went ahead and stamped it with theyre deposit only stamp and sent it back to me with a rejection letter saying they could not accept it. but now we cant cash it cuz they have stamped it, can they legally do that?
