Statute of Limitations

What is the name of your state? KS

How long after a debt can a company come back at you if they haven't contacted you previously? After 2 1/2 years of no contact from Consolidated Media Services, I got a phone call telling me I have almost $500 to pay them. I haven't received any notice on any account balance over the past 2 1/2 years, how should I handle this? CMS is or has been on trial for violation of Federal Laws, so is this their way of scamming me to pay their legal bills?

What kind of debt is this and when was the date of last activity?

It is a debt for magazines, you know the ones telemarketers try selling right after you get your credit card, the one's that stupid young kids get because they have a credit card. And the last activity was probably Feb '03 or so.

I'm not sure what kind of debt this would be, but even if it is an open account the SOL is 3 years, so they can contact you regarding this debt. They may be tacking on extra fees, but you would have to ask them if that is what they are doing. You can also request that they validate the debt. Below is a website where you can get sample letters. Be sure to send the DV letter by CRRRM.
