What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

Hello, my dad stopped paying a credit card when he left the country back in 2000. I found court documents on NJ state's website showing a collection agency filed a judgment against him in 2003 (the first), 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2011 (looks to be the last). I know in New Jersey there is a statute of limitations on collection companies for collecting debt on a revolving credit line (6 years). My dad wants to know, if the last judgment was done on 2011, will he have to wait another year before the collection agency can legally collect? Will a lawyer be able to find out more information than my own research?

How do you know when a debit is time barred?

This isn't a "debt", it's a judgment. Judgments are good for 20 years from the date of entry.

To expand: the recent activity isn't new filings; it's probably renewals of the same judgment. That means the 20-year clock last restarted in 2011.

Pay the debt or pay a bankruptcy attorney to deal with it; those are the options.

Perhaps your "research" would have been more profitable had you a Diogenes lantern.

FYI, if there are any other issues such as this in the future, the moment your father left the state the clock stopped on the SOL for the original debt. It would have started again when and if he returned to the state.
