Stopped Check on Vacation Rental

I have a villa in Hilton Head(South Carolina) that I rent out.
In August I accepted a two week rental which was last minute so I agreed that the guest could make a check payment into my account when she arrived(this was all arranged via e-mail).
Towards the end of her rental, she still had not paid, so I asked my neighbour to go around to collect a check for $1700, which he did.
The check was paid into my bank but was returned a week later(Returned not paid). I have contacted the guest by e-mail and phone but her only reply was that her mother was in the hospital and she would get back to me.

During the rental, she did compain about seeing a ****roach and had a problem with the washer so my rental company's staff did visit her in my villa.

I have the check, her home address, home and mobile phone numbers, what are my next steps.
