student loanWhat is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Mass. (NY question) I am being haunted by a collection agency that told me I never paid off a student loan from 37 years ago (when the loan was taken out). It was taken out in NY State. I have no records to support anything like this after that many years. Can they do this? Please and thank you, TJH |

| Government-backed student loans can haunt you forever. They can sue, garnish wages, take tax returns and more. Personally, I think it sucks. If the government feels that statute of limitations shouldn't be applied to them -- why should it apply to any debt? DC

| Its a 3rd party debt collector. You have the right, under the FDCPA, to ask for proof of the debt - its called validation. So, send them a debt validation letter and ask them for whatever they've got to prove the loan is unpaid. You can find info and sample letters at www.creditinfocenter.com
