Student Loan Default

What is the name of your state? OH

I went to college a while back and filed for student loans, I took sometime off and filed my deferments with the college advisor like I was told by them to do. I decided to return to college a yr later and submitted that I was once again a full time student. I finished that semister off and stopped college all together. At the end of that time I filed another deferment form with the college and was told that it was for a full yr. and that at the end of that yr I would have to return for another form. I did so with the thought that it was taken care of, within about 6 months I started getting letters saying that I had defaulted on my loans and I had to pay in full my balance. I told the gentlemen on the phone that I had signed forms for a deferment with the college and that they were supposed to send them in. He told me that it was not the colleges responsiblity and that they never got them. They took my tax return last yr and applied that. I told the guy to send me the information because I wasnt sure but it seemed that there was an excess of over $2000.00 in loans I never made. He never sent them and I got a credit report and it shows it as well. I lost my wallet at college and reported it. I am not sure that someone didnt file for a loan in my name and get it. For some reason my name is misspelled on my loan forms. But they do not seem to believe me. I am currently filing for disability and I am told that I can get them written off since I cannot perform the duties that I went to college for. Is that true and what can I do about the college not filing the deferments?

What did you go to college for?

What is your disability?

You can only have them discharged through disability if you are completely and permanently disabled, not just because you can't work in your trained field. Your doctor has to believe you can't work at all, ever again.

You also cannot return to school to retrain if you have them discharged due to disability because they consider that like being able to work and will update the loans for payment again.

If you meet the total and permanent disability requirements, you can print the proper forms from the Federal student loan website. It must be signed by you and your doctor and they actually only pause the loans for several years to make sure that nothing in your situation changes enabling you to work again, after that time period, they then discharge them.
