Summons served for credit card debt

What is the name of your state? Washington
I was served a summons.What do I need to do? How do I defend against this lawsuit ?When I contacted the lawyers office they said the only kind of payment plan they could do was $250.00 a month well I can't do that and put food on the table.I work my wife stays home with our child.The debt is 2 credit cards totaling $1600.00 we were both working when I got these trying to establish good credit when she lost her job we couldn't make the payments.Please help
