TERRIFIED to death by medical bills PLEASE HELP ME!

I live in NJ. I have problems with my medical bills. I gave birth 5 months ago. At the beginning of my pregnancy I was required to apply for Medicaid to help me cover my bills and I got approved. I was not allowed to apply for Charity Care because I was elegible for Medicaid. I started getting bills, asked the hospital they said Medicaid should cover them .... those bills started going to collection agencies ... asked Medicaid and whoever filed my application put me as an illegal alien so i had coverage only for the first month of service at the hospital and the delivery. By the time things got fixed with Medicaid I was about to give birth so they said it was too late for them to cover any bills..... I still wasn't able to apply for Charity Care because I was "elegible" for Medicaid. I just got summons from the Superior Court of New Jersey for two of the first bills..... (one of the bills is supposed to be covered by Medicaid because it is from the first month of service at the hospital, I have proof of that). I am a single mom in my twenties, trying to finish college, making $18,000 a year ..... and I owe the hospital $14,000 for my prenatal care.... I am terrified to death because I guess I am going to keep being sued for every single bill.... What can I do? Do I answer the complaint, How? and what do I do to avoid being sued for the other bills? Many of those bills are already in collection agencies.... I guess my credit score is getting destroyed too (no wonder I don't even get approved for a Macys card) Any advise? PLEASE HELP ME! I don't know much about legal issues. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

I think you need to talk to someone from legal aid in your area.

If you only make 18K/yr. and you need to support 2 people on that, you don't NEED a Macy's card. In fact, you don't need ANY card on 18K.
