Timeshare fee debtWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Rhode Island I own a timeshare but have been unable to pay the maintenance fees for 2 years due to a drastic increase in the fees. The debt has gone to a lawyer's office for collection and now I have been served a summons for a substantially larger amount of money than what is truly owed. Do I contact the lawyer's office now to negotiate a settlement? Please advise. Thank You |

| You are now being sued and have had court costs and attorney fees added to your debt. You need to respond to the suit before you do ANYTHING. Then you can contact the lawyer to try to negotiate, but you should plan to show up to the court date no matter what, even if they claim they will drop the suit etc, cause they could easily lie to get you to not show up so they are awarded a default judgement.

Timeshare fee debtThank you for your advice. However, the only date on the summons is 3/9/09 and I received the summons on 3/12/09. Does that mean I missed the court date without even knowing about it? |

| You need to call the court and find out.
