unaware of garnishment

Just logged onto my bank account this evening, there had been a misc. debit from my account which in turn made my account become insufficient. Due to the insufficiency, I was charged with overdraft fees because of other debits I was aware of and had accounted for personally. I called telebank and was told that my account had been garnished and in order to find out anymore info. I would need to call back bank during banking hours. Telebank did tell me that they have to abide to legal documentation, but my question is should I have been notified of the garnishment so that my personal bill, i.e. rent,utilities,car payment,and care for family could be paid for as well rather than make it more difficult to now pay for anything? I am unaware of any future debits, and how long and how might have done this?

The ONLY way anyone can levy your bank account is if they already have a judgment against you. Have you been sued ? How long ago ?

No, they do NOT have to tell you they're going to drain your bank account, you'd move the money so they couldn't get it - who wouldn't ?? So, they swoop in with their judgment execution papers and take all they can get and they do NOT care that you have to live and pay bills. All they care about is that you owe money, the court says you have to pay, and you haven't, but you have money in the bank.
