Unpaid tuition at collection agency

What is the name of your state? Florida.

My husband went to Troy State University (in Alabama). He owes them approx 5100.00. It was turned over to a lawyer's office who handles collections. They tacted on an additional approx 1700.00 or 30% in addition to the original 5100.00 of tuition. Am I obligated to pay the 1700.00 they added on? What if I don't pay the 1700.00 & only the 5100.00 which is what I actually owe??
