valdiation of debt question

I know as part of validation collectors have to be prove they are authorized to collect the debt, i.e. they purchased it and wearn't simply assigned it, etc.

What happens if the first collector gives up and down the road a second collector tries to collect the alleged debt?

Does the second collector have to be prove they purchased from the first collector who has to be able prove they legally got it from the orginal creditor?

Or does the second collector only have to go back through the orginal creditor.
