Wage Garnishment in California

What is the name of your state?
California

I am writing this question for my mom. Normally, my mom takes home about $900 every two weeks. Last paycheck, however, she only took home about $300. At first she thought it was a mistake, but after talking to the auditor where she works, she found out that it was due to wage garnishment. The auditor told my mom that a notice was sent out 2 weeks ago, but my mom never received it. She is supposed to receive a new notice soon.

My mom is unsure of the reason for the wage garnishment, but she thinks it is due to hospital payments. A few years ago she went to the hospital to deal with a stomach problem (outpatient surgery). Currently, she is undergoing laser treatments every few weeks to deal with a really bad kidney stone problem. The debt may also be due to taxes, but she doesn't think so.

My mom hasn't made many hospital payments (if any). But, she does have insurance. From what I understand, her insurance deductable is $500 and she has to pay about 20% of the total cost.

My mom doesnt make too much to begin with, and taking out so much money from each paycheck will only leave my mom with about $600 per month instead of $1800 ($900 normal take home pay - $600 garnished = $300. $300 every two weeks = $600 per month.) My mom is freaking out right now because $600 does not even come close to covering her rent, utilities, car payment, groceries, etc.

My question is, what relief does my mom have? My mom is willing to make payments, but she cannot afford to have so much taken out of her check.

Also, I am not sure if this matters, but my mom works for the county in social services. I am not quite sure of her job title, but she meets with medicare clients.

My response:

Please state and list the exact name of each deduction and the amounts therefor from her paycheck stub.
