what was a gift is now being claimed as a loan

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

I live in NY state and was seeing a person for several years. that person gave me $5000 to pay off a debt that i had. the person who gave me the money said that it was a gift - that they would give me the shirt off their back and not to give it another thought. i met someone else and broke off that relationship and just received a letter from an attorney saying that the person has hired this firm to collect on the $5000 LOAN that i borrowed 2 years ago. Do i really have to repay what was given to me as a gift?

was there a written contract or prom note?
