We live in California. When my husband and I bought a house, I used $25,000 left to me from my dad's life insurance before I had even met my husband to make the downpayment. When we sell the house as part of our divorce, am I entitled to get that money back, or at least half of it? He says no, because it was a "gift." What is the name of your state?

You co-mingled the funds when you put them into community property. You will be entitled to half of the equity/appreciation in the property (which automatically means that you will get 1/2 of that 25,000). However, you should verify that with a local attorney to be absolutely certain.
