custody court

What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? NEW YORK

I have a court date coming up in a few weeks for custody. The kids now live with me - I moved out while my husband was at work because I feared violence otherwise. My question is this : Can anyone tell me how best to be prepared for this court date, I do not have a lawyer and as far as I know neither does he. Maybe you can tell me what kind of questions they will ask or info I will need to bring to be best prepared. thank you.
