death of husband, separated for almost 5 yrs

California, my girlfriend was married and then they each separated and went their own ways back in 96, was tring to locate him thru people searches, and found out he was deceased... What does she need to do if anything. doesn't want married status, taking her maiden name back. ty in advance

She should contact Social Security because she may get a couple thousand for his funeral. Depending on their ages she may also be entitled to other benefits now or later. Sometime down the line, for mortgage applications, etc. she will need several certified copies of his death certificate.She may also be entitled to some of his other assets or portions of pension funds.
