i live in kansas is there any advantage/disadvantages to do it yourself divorce kits.

One down side is that since you aren't a family law attorney you may miss things that need detailed spelling out in the decree such as times, dates etc for visitation, support payments amounts, potential moving of one or the other parties involved.

If these aren't addressed in the initial decree and custody order and a conflict arises then you would be forced to go back to court to resolve this issue which would require more money and most likely the aid of an attorney.
