Divorce with complications

A man of mid 40's age and living in North Carolina is wanting a divorce because his wife is making him bankrupt. He has already had to take a loan to pay his bills, using his AND his mother's house as collateral. She is making his life miserable, and he can't divorce her because she has threatened to take half of what he has left (many being his mother's things given to him). If he is able to afford a lawyer, how should he go about it? Could it be possible that she be made to pay off his debts? Please help, as he is almost suicidal. Please give me some advice for him.
