My response:
Divorce (or "Dissolution") terminates the marriage.
Legal Separation terminates the financial responsibilities each spouse has to each other, but on paper, they are still married. Some people choose this method for religious purposes or tax reasons.
A Legal Separation can be converted to a Dissolution at any time upon request of either party.
