What is the difference in divorce and separation other than divorce being more permanent?

With a separation do assets of one party ever become subject to be divided if a divorce is then filed?

Indiana really doesn't have legal separation in the sense that many other states have it. If you want to clearly divide assets and liabilities its really best to file for divorce.
