divorced or not

What is the name of your state? New York [COLOR=purple][/COLOR]
How does someone find out whether they are still married or whether they are divorced. My boyfriend was married 16 years ago for about 3 months and then his wife left, moved to Maine and called him and said she was filing for divorce and that she would be in touch. He did not hear anything. A few years later one of his friends said they ran into her, she was remarried, had gotten the divorce by publication and my boyfriend has no idea if it's true and no idea how to find her. How do we find out the truth?
