Is it really ok to just print out those papers from the internet and then bring them down to the county courthouse? We just see it as stupid to pay hundreds of dollars for lawyers when there's nothing to fight over. I guess I just need some reassurance that I am not going to get ripped off. |
If you have nothing to fight over...then its fine. You can always get an attorney later if one of you changes their mind before its done.
However...keep in mind a few things. Creditors are not parties to your divorce, therefore no matter what you agree, if there are joint debts and one of you agrees to take on a particular debt...if that person doesn't pay, the creditors will come after the other party and the other party will end up paying and taking the "hit" on their credit report too.
If there is a home involved, the the party keeping the home needs to refinance in their own name...and the party not keeping the home needs to execute a "quit claim" deed (at the closing of the refinance).
Similarly, cars loans and cars titled in both names need to be refinanced and retitled as well.
Joint credit cards need to be cancelled...joint bank accounts need to be closed.
