Finalization of divorce in california

What is the name of your state? California

My question concerns the finalization of a divorce.
If a person is served with divorce papers and
signs them, but dies before sending back the paperwork
does the signing of the papers finalize the divorce?
Or did the person have to return the papers to finalize
the divorce?

What constitutes legal separation? If legally separated
does the spouse have legal claim to her husband's assets
if he dies?
