house used as storage for ex whom moved out

My mothers boyfriend recently moved out and a injuction was obtained for her protection, upon going to court on the required date her ex was given a date to pickup his personal property. He picked up some of his items but left others (abandoned?). He is hoping to keep these items at the residence until he finds a place to stay.
I see the items as abandoned, does she had to send a certified letter advising him they will be removed or what? How are they declaired ABANDONED!!!

Who gave him the date to have his belongings picked up? If it was the court what did it state? Did your mother have an attorney during this and what has he advised?
