What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

If one of the spouses inherit a considerable sum of money during the two were married, does this inherited sum go into play when the division of assets time comes, or does that money belong to the inheriting spouse only no matter what ?

Inheritances are always separate property, unless they have been comingled with marital assets and are untraceable as separate property.

So, to be specific, put the money into a separate account with the inheritor's name only and leave it there.
