| my sister filed for divorce 8 months ago. to finalize the divorce her lawyer needed retirement printouts and savings plan prinouts from her husbands work place. In 8 months her lawyer has not gotten these, and advised her to sign the final papers with out seeing any dollar figures. She has refused. She now owes him $4000.00 and the bill increases each time she calls and asks him if he has done anything. At one point when the bill was up to $2000.00 she had a consultation with another lawyer who suggested she drop this lawyer and start over. Because she owed this much and is on a limited income, she financially could not do this. Her husband was ordered to pay her a cash sum for part of the settlement in weekly installments. The wording on the divorce papers has it stated as alimony. She told her lawyer it was not alimony, and it would affect her at tax time His reply was,"You have such low wages, It doesn't make any difference. This may be so, but it is incorrect. What options does my sister have now. This is a small property settlement divorce, the lawyer is taking advantage of her and will surely eat up all her settlement by his stalling tactics. What can she do at this point? Can she file a complaint against the lawyer or do something to force him to get into action? For Mary: Cass City, Michigan. |

| I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship. You can switch lawyers at any time and may be able to bring such lawyer complaints for malpractice at any time. Soooooo**************.....call either your state bar association or http://www.attorneypages.com; get a family law attorney; then lodge a formal complaint through an attorney (advised) or directly through the bar association against the original attorney. |
