Legal Separation

What is the name of your state? WA

Almost two years ago my husband and I separated. In the 2 years we have lived apart he has built up over $45,000 in debt from credit cards alone due to gambling. He now wants to claim bankruptcy so we have decided to hurry and divorce before he files to keep me out of it. Since it take 3 months before a divorce is final I'm contemplating getting a 'Legal Separation' to protect myself. Is there a waiting period of a legal separation? Since we have been living apart for the last 2 years and the credit cards are in his name only, am I safe? Right now I'm concerned about losing my house or small business because he can't keep up with his payments since the house is still in both of our names. I have already been in to see two different lawyers in the last 2 years for consultations. The first one told me it was a waste of time and money to legally separate, now I'm wondering if I got bad advise.
