What is the name of your state? Maryland

Status: No Kids; Have property and boats; married three years.
I want to separate. If I move out do I need to file for a legal separation or can I just leave? What is "willful abandonment?"
I want to protect myself when it comes time to divide assests. Please advise.
Thanks!
