I live in PA where legal separation is not recognized. It is also my understanding that I can not force my spouse to leave the residence without a court order. However, we have a unique circumstance in that we live in a house owned by a person in my family. We pay rent to said person but this is not an arrangement backed by legal documents. Does this change my rights as to whether or not I can force my spouse to leave the property for a trial separation?

No. It is still the marital residence. It should, however, make it a bit easier to get a court order for you to have temporary possession of the place.
