serving civil summons in NC

I live in Salisbury NC in Rowan County I am filing for divorce myself.
I want to know if I can serve my ex-wife with the summons myself? If I cannot can I get a friend to do it? I know I can do it by certified mail or have the sheriff do it but my ex and I are on good terms and it would be free to do it myself or a friend do it. I just need to know if it is legal.

Have the sheriff or a process server do it. You are a party and cannot serve process.
