Want to protect my assets

I live in Oregon, and am separated from my husband. Planning to file for divorce, but not sure if I need an attorney. There are no kids, only the house. He is living in it now, but will probably sell in a couple years. We refinanced it after I left ( I paid for the refi), so that the payments would be lower for him, but my name is still on it, since he couldn't qualify on his own. I want to make sure that I get part of the profit when he sells the house, but other than that, don't really feel we need legal help. If I just do a simple divorce with on-line help, how can I make sure to get some of the money I've put into the house?

If protecting your interests is as important to you as you say it is, then you need to break down and hire someone to make sure that your rights and liabilities are taken care of in this situation.

If you don't hire legal counsel and do this on your own, you may end up getting screwed down the road.

Not all do-it-yourself divorces are a bad idea. Some are actually a good money-saving idea, if there aren't kids involved and there aren't significant assets or liabilities.

Diligent, hard-working folks can do a fine job on a do-it-yourself divorce when there aren't significant risks to either party.

But, from your description, in my opinion, yours is not one of those cases.
