Are we married???

I married my husband May 31 1997 on the notion that he was divorced from his first wife. Later in July of 1997 we had recieved a call from his first wife; she said that they were not divorced and that she wanted one. My husband went to a lawyer and filed for a divorce from her and didn't tell the lawyer that he was already married to me so he was granted the divorce. I want to know if our marriage was even legal. I basiclly want to know if I'm legally married to this man. If not is there any thing like common law marriage in TN if so what are his rights if I want to leave. PLEASE HELP!!!
