what is the legal definition for insanity, regarding fault in a divorce

I live in NY State. I know you can divorce someone because of insanity but how exactly do you define insanity?
Would a person be insane because they suffer from depression and were hospitalized involuntarily for 4 days due to suicidal thoughts??

I don't know the laws of NY, but I highly doubt you have a case to divorce by reason of insanity. In MD the person has to be confined, to a hospital or an institution for a period of more then 3 years. (my ex was insane, still is, just ask him, he'll tell you! Heck, ask the local VA hospital too) Laws differ from state to state, but I doubt that 4 day stay and depression (which you'd have to prove was incurable) are enough to go on and if it would even be a one of the legal grounds for divorce in NY. Depending on the circumstances, there is alway cruel and inhumane treatment? Depression & the confinement would probably come into play if there was a custody dispute. Sounds like you might have to do the year seperation thing.
