Will not sign divorce unless she gets the Green card

Her conditional green card expires next year. It is still a few months before the time to petition for the condition to be removed. They have been residing in separate addresses for over a year. He recently filed for divorce based on abandonment. However, she refuses to sign the no-cpntest divorce papers or any Separation Agreeements until she gets her green card next year. He feels he should not file the joint petition with her to remove the 'condition' on her green card since they are no longer together. She threatens to make it a difficult divorce unless he does so and threatens that she has family and friends who are lawyers.

How can he protected from the threat of a lengthy divorce proceeding ? If he waits till her green card expires, will the divorce be easier ?

It might be easier or it might. What is he planning to do with INS? Swear they are still together and attend all interviews as a happily married couple? There are NO guarantees that divorce will be easy with her.
