a few days ago, i went to the grocery store, where i encountered my mother in law whom i had not seen in over three years. as soon as she spotted me in line to pay my groceries she emmediately started to yell from across the
way that she was going to wait outside for me to beat me up.
at the same time the cashier that was ringing up my grceries
asked me if there was a problem. i then told the cashier that this lady was my mother in law and that she has been threatning me for the longest time. i also asked if i could have some one escort me out to my car. by the time i had paid for my groceries i noticed that she was no longer looking my way and so i decided to try to get out of the store without her noticing but as i was near the door she came up behind me and started to insult me stating that she was going to kill me. i then asked her if she was brave enough to do this in a public place and that i would not hesitate in calling the police. she stated she was not afraid of the police and i proceded to leave the store letting her know that i did not want any problems and to leave me alone. as soon as i was out the door she jumped me from behind hitting me several times on the head and and pulling my hair also knocking my glasses off. at that point i managed to turn around and began to defend myself up until someone separated us and so she left the seen. the store manager had the police called and so i then called my husband. after my husband came we continued to wait for the police and finally made a report. the police stated i can either or apply for an order of protection and a warrant against her for assault. we then proceded to go to the court building to get this done when little did i know that she had already gone and applied for the same against me. therefore the commissioner and the police emmediately took her side. it was not until i read her report on the petition that i realized that she had totally turned the story around and also added to it. claimed on her petition that i assaulted her and that i also took out a pocket knife and stabbed her in her right hand, which this is totally not true. i have witnesses inside the store that saw that she started first and also witnesses that saw that she jumped me first once we were outside. also have a witness that saw that i did not have a knife at all. also while we were at the court house she also told the commissioner that i had been staulking her and calling her home from my job to insult her. this is also not true. she has also applied for an order of protection against her own son, which is my husband. i would like to know how do i go about this? i am not sure if i should get a lawyer to represent me on my court date or if i should try to persue this further and try to prove that she has lied the whole time. please help.
also, if by getting a lawyer, can he/she change the court date?

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Wow. You need a lawyer ASAP. The lawyer will defend you, bring the counterclaim, and subpoena witnesses from the store to show she was the aggressor and you were merely using self defense. Try http://www.attorneypages.com

Hope this helps.
