LAW
produce satisfactory grounds for application of (or exemption from) a procedure or penalty.
http://www.nolo.com/dictionary/order-to-show-cause-term.html

An order from a judge that directs a party to come to court and convince the judge why the judge shouldn't grant an action proposed by the other side or, occasionally, by the judge. For example, in a divorce, at the request of one parent a judge might issue an order directing the other parent to appear in court on a particular date and time to show cause why the first parent should not be given sole physical custody of the children.
In layman's terms, it means the court is prepared to order something based on complaints, law, and evidence, and it's your turn to address the court and convince the judge otherwise. Whatever is about to be ordered is probably something that will negatively affect you if you are the subject of the show cause hearing.

Example: You and your ex have a court order in place which allows for visitation every other weekend and one weeknight. You've been refusing him his weeknight on the grounds that it isn't convenient. He would file a motion for contempt (or whatever similar mechanism is in place in your state). If the judge felt the argument warranted it, a show cause order would be issued, and you'd be required to appear and show cause as to why you should not be held in contempt. If the judge finds against you, a broad range of remedial measures are available.
