My boyfriend and I have recently split up, we lived together for two years and were common law. Since the break up I have moved out, numberous times I have contacted him asking if I could get my belongings from him. He has responded by calling me names, threatening me and slandering my name to everyone. He has also gotten physically abusive with me on more than one occasion, and throughout the entire time we were dating he was cheating on me. I have kept all of the messages he has sent to me since the break up. I need help to figuring out how to make it stop without having to call the athorities, I would just like to get my belongings back. Please help!

That's a stupid priority.

BTW, we really need the name of your state to help you, laws vary.

The situation is clearly beyond what you can do without involving the "athorities" (sic). If you choose not to do that, then you have little chance of getting your stuff back.

I would plan on contacting the police, asking for an escort, and taking them with you to the ex's house to retrieve your belongings. Plan accordingly by scheduling this at a time when you know he will be home, and prepare a list of items beforehand to take with you. You might also wish to bring proof of ownership, as anything you can't prove is yours may have to be left behind in an ownership dispute.

To be honest, OP does not even have a clue as to her marital status apparently. Common Law refers to being married, thus requiring a divorce, not separating as girlfriend and boyfriend. The judge will determine the property issue in divorce court.

Since the OP foolishly failed to include her state... and Common Law marriage is a status in but a handful of states, and theirs was only 2 years...

The OP holding herself out to be married during her relationship may be completely irrelevant, as you should know.

Yep, which then gets into issues of potential tax fraud etc...

Doesn't look like she was holding herself out to be anything other than a girlfriend. There is no common law marriage here.

The OP said two things that are in conflict. How that equals certainty of meaning is your deal.
