Question

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

Goodmorning everyone. I hope I am doing this correctly because I have never posted on any thread anywhere before but I am getting desperate for assistance. I know I need a lawyer but the cost would have to go on a credit card and them im worried I wont be able to make the payments and I know my husband would not of course!
I have been married 16 yrs, 3 kids, stay at home Mom for almost the past 3. Husband and I have been off and on with the marriage being good & bad, I have always thought he was a bit emotionally abusive but have delt with it fairly well. I recently told him I would no longer tolerate his "cold shoulder" treatments and have been sleeping on the couch or with the kids for 1.5 months which has pretty much enraged him. At this point he put up a deadbolt on our bedroom door and is now gone to work for 2 days. My questions is, (and I really do not want to get the police involved yet) is it legal for me to cut the lock off? Our main computer and printer are in there which we need for homework for the kids, as well as my family photos, books, bills, etc. Luckily I got my clothes and toiletries out before he locked it and he tossed the rest of my clothes out on the floor. I have not really been physical abused other than being pushed and one time "choked" briefly (but threatened plenty of times) but we have holes and dents in our walls from his fists and from throwing things. My (his) side of the family say to work it out, I don't have a lot of family but my sister says to divorce him. I am in the middle and want him to get help. I have had the gut feeling he's having an affair but have been locked out of his computer and cell phone for almost a year now and cannot prove it. Our house isn't worth the mortgage amount any more and he says he will let it forclose so we can't live here anymore. Whew! This note seems like something I would see someone else writing, not me! Thank you for any assistance you can give me on my door lock questions. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Yes, you have the legal right to cut the lock off of your bedroom door.

Why are you tolerating this treatment?

Have you gone to your local domestic violence center for some assistance?
If not, you should do so, today if possible.
You can find your center through your local mental health center.

You can also get a low cost consult with an attorney by calling the Florida Bar Lawyer Refferal Service at 1-800-342-8011.

You also need to start looking for a job ASAP.
