What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

When trying to catch a criminal stalker, can I legally record their actions to prove it? It wouldn't make sense for them to say I can't, so why am I hearing it is? Seems like a lot of judges deny that permission when you go to ask for it on the temporary restraining order too. Guess there is no hope for people like me.
