My 20 year old nephew has been charged with possessing 22 dollars worth of marijuana. He has never been arrested, and is a college sophomore. He deos not want to have his mom find out about this and help him with an attorney. Can he plead this himself?

Any Advice

If the infraction occurred on campus, you can count on the university sending a letter to Mommy. If it did not happen on campus, then there's no reason for Mommy to find out her adult son committed a crime.

You should also note, however, that a guilty possession conviction can make students inelligible for federal aid, and if that turns out to be a problem here, then you can sure as heck bet Mommy will find out then.

As for actual court precedings, no, adult college student does not need Mommy holding his hand. I'd still recommend a lawyer though...
