California-Is there a way to find out what sentence a person was given upon conviction?
Yes. Go to the courthouse where the sentence was imposed. If you have the name of the defendant and the approximate date of the case, it will help. Some courts have this information on line as well.

Add: and I can only speak for LA County courts for this one. You can go to ANY criminal court in the county and ask them for the minutes of the case (it'll cost you, but not that much). It will be right in there (included will be whether or not he accepted a plea to a lesser charge or if there was time served).
