NEED HELP.. with criminal posession of marijuana.

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

I am in NY. The other night my friend received a ticket for criminal posseiosn of marijuana because he was smoking it around his block. He has to go to court sometime in januarty and he also had a small amount of weed on him like less then 1 gram. Can someone tell me what's going to happen and the maximum and minimum sentence he will receive...and it is his first offense
