Not registering as a narcotics offender - San Diego, CA

After many years of screwing up my life with drugs and bad decisions, I have finally gotten myself on the "straight and narrow". I was release from 2.5 years of prison time, for drug charges, in 2001. I successfully completed parole in 2004, never to look back. One of the conditions of my release/parole, however, is continuing to register annually as a narcotics offender. I registered prior to being released from parole (in 2004), but have not re-registered since, as I see no benefit in doing so and there are apparently no repercussions for not doing so.

There is always that lingering concern in the back of my mind, though, that this may come back to bite me in the a$$. Should I be concerned? Is there any repercussions that I could face for not registering as a narcotics offender every year until 2011?

Question: What are the benefits of registering?
Answer: There will no longer be a lingering concern in the back of your mind that it will come back to bite you in the a$$.

You are required to register for the first five years you are out ... failure to do so is a crime and you CAN go to jail. (See H&S 11590 - 11595)

And having worked in your area before, I can tell you that the San Diego County DA does (or used) prosecute for these offenses.

I agree with the response - you won't have a nagging concern anymore - by registering.

On the other hand I hear you- I had to register to comply with my probation and sentencing requirements- I don't like it either. I got a dui for having a drug in my system - amphetamines - and a charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance HS 11550 -
why that makes me a drug offender?
And people who drink too much and drive don't have to register is not fair.

I think as long as you are on the straight and narrow - you wouldn't need to even worry about it - for now that registry isn't really used for much- so I was told. In some other states - they have their drug offender registries public - like a sex offender's registry.

On the third hand - maybe complying with this somehow keeps you on track, the right track.

29ATWA, did you happen to notice this thread is from 2008? Did you know this is 2010? Don't resurrect old threads. I'm sure the original poster doesn't really care if you agree or not since it's been so long.
